Predictions for 2023

Updated: Jan 16, 2023

Greetings one and all,

2022 was a big year for the Warhammer community; we had the introduction of Necromunda: Ash Wastes, the launch of the Horus Heresy: Age of Darkness, expansions to the Age of Sigmar world, the long-awaited return of the Squats under the Leagues of Votann, and so much more it’s hard to imagine how to top last years releases.

But with the New Year now out of the way, it’s time for us all to start looking forwards to 2023, and as last year was such a big one, I have high hopes for the next 12 months and with hopes come predictions of what we might see later on in the year.

So here are my 5 top predictions for what we might see released by Games Workshop in 2023.

1. Upgrade Kits for the Imperial Guard

The Cadians recently got an upgrade pack which gave them a range of Specialists, Medics, Snipers, Officers, and even the Walking Wounded. So why isn't it possible to make an upgrade pack that allows you to model other guard regiments? Personally, I’d like to see an upgrade pack for the Valhallans, Vostroyians and Steel Legion using the Death Korps of Kreig as a base model. We all want to see other guard regiments marching to war across the tabletop, so come on GW let's do this!

2. Legion-Specific Specialised Units. In Plastic!

The Horus Heresy game is going strong and has provided us with a dozen or so models that we never thought we’d see in plastic, so why not take this further? Each Legion has a handful of Specialist Units, such as the Grave Wardens of the Death Guard, the Tyrant Siege Terminator of the Iron Warriors, or the Dark Fury Assault Squads of the Raven Guard. There is no reason why these models can't be made in plastic, or as part of another upgrade kit like the Legion Specific Torsos and Shoulderpads you can get now and that each Legion is already, currently, on the way to getting. I’d love to see more of these elite units on the tabletop, they really add to the flavour of each Legion.

3. Necromunda: Ash Wastes Vehicles for the Van Sarr and Delaque Gangs

So far we’ve seen some (in my opinion, relatively standard-looking) Orlock Quads, Mad Max-style Goliath Maulers, flying Escher Cutters, Cawdor thieves who have run off with a collection of mechanical legs called Ridge Walkers, and a bunch of giant fleas called Dustback Helamites ridden by the Ash Waste Nomads. So the only 2 main gangs that are missing from this roster are House Van Saar and House Delaque.

I’m expecting House Van Saar to glide into the Wastes on some kind of skimmer, as they already have a number of technological machines that enable them to zip around in the Underhive like a group of Green Goblin wannabes, but when it comes to House Delaque… If someone doesn’t just strap a saddle to a Nacht-Ghul and ride one of those floating Cthulu monsters off out into the Wastes I will be severely disappointed.

4. The Emperor's Children Being Given Their Own Kit and Legion-Specific Rulebook

What with Angron being taken a bit more notice of lately, it’s entirely possible that the Emperor's Children might be shown some love… We can hope.

5. The Return of Another Loyalist Primarch

The Lion, Leman Russ, or Jaghatai Kahn to be precise. One that I don’t have a high prediction for in particular though is Rogal Dorn because, well, only having his hand remaining after what happened to him, I’m of the distinct opinion that he be dead. And well dead… There isn’t usually much chance of someone coming back from that (well, unless you’re Vulcan that is).

These, of course, are just my musings and some I honestly expect (such as Van Saar vehicles), while others I doubt will happen but are fun to think about anyway (Legion-Specific Units, I’m looking at you).

So, these have been my predictions for 2023. Roll on the New Year!
