Saturnine Review

Greetings one and all,
I found a large and heavy box on my doorstep a few days ago and to my utter delight, it contained the new Horus Heresy Saturnine boxset, and some kind of three headed snake kinda icon on it… Weird… Anyway, that's what we’re looking at today, the new Hours Heresy Saturnine boxset, and let me tell you. It's a beast of a box.

As you're all aware, this is the flagship boxset for the Horus Heresy 3.0. It contains a huge number of models, including the new namesake Saturnine Terminators and Dreadnought, 40 Mk II Legionaries, Disintegrators, and the Araknae Quad Accelerator Platform. As well as this, the box also contains the new 3rd ed rulebook, tokens, dice, templates, and a proper ruler stick.

Overall, it is a very well-stocked box (seriously, this box weighs 4.5kgs or a ⅓ of my 1-year-old son, so it's a chonky box).
Model Reviews
Praetor in Saturnine Terminator Armour

I must admit, in 27 years of building these models, this is the first one to make me feel intimidated. For one model it is insanely complex and detailed, the sprue is about three times the size of the centurions and 50% bigger than the normal Saturnine Terminators, so make sure you study the build guide before you pick up your clippers.
Saturnine Terminators

Much like the Praetor, these are very detailed and involved models to build, though don’t seem as complex as the Saturnines. Nonetheless, they do look like a good bit of fun to build. (I’ll be doing an in-depth review of these tomorrow)
Saturnine Dreadnought

Oh boy, this thing is huge, and if I’m honest the sprues don’t really give that indication. I’m curious if this is going to get more options like the Contemptor and Leviathan did in 2nd, because a melee version would be a little funny to my mind.
Centurion in MkII Power Armour

This is hands down my favourite model in the whole box, so much so I might buy two! Not sure how easy it’s going to be to convert into other loadouts, but that's a challenge for future Grey.
Legionaries in MkII Power Armour

The armour that carried the Great Crusade Mk II comes in plastic now. Though in the process of being phased out by the time of Istvan, the sheer number of these suits that were created meant they were present throughout the Heresy, though in rapidly diminishing numbers.
Araknae Quad Accelerator Platform

A Legionary in a stationary quad-barreled ball, kinda like someone taped two Sicaran turrets together and added an energy field. Looks dead simple to build, but I’m not a fan of this kind of static defence.
Tokens

One sprue of tokens, which makes sense with all the new effects that are bouncing around the table now. Not really much more to say on these.
Ruler

There is a two-part ruler, provided it’s only 24inches but should be enough for a starter game. I do think that a minute's silence for the old red whippy stick is in order though.
Summary
It’s a really nice boxset. Personally though I do think the Age of Darkness one was better, but then again, I’m not really a Saturnine fan. But that’s just my opinion.

I’ll be diving into the rules soon and from what I’ve seen so far, I’m really liking them. Once I have a few games under my belt I’ll be sure to write a how-to-play article in the future. But for now, I’m going to go off and start building my World Eaters.
