Combat Patrol: Adeptus Mechanicus

Greetings one and all,

Today we’re going to go over another Combat Patrol Box and this time, it’s for one of my favourite factions: Adeptus Mechanicus. So, say your prayers to the Omnissiah as we ask, is this Combat Patrol: Adeptus Mechanicus boxset value for money and of value on the table top?

So, what’s in the box? The Combat Patrol: Adeptus Mechanicus contains the following units: 1x Tech-Priest Enginseer, 1x Onager Dunecrawler, 3x Kataphron Destroyers (but they can alternatively be assembled as Kataphron Breachers) and 10x Skitarii Rangers (which can also alternatively be assembled as Skitarii Vanguard). That's a nice number of models with a large amount of flexibility in what you can build. Now, to look at if these are value for money, I’ll be using the Gamesworkshops RRP for my calculations.

1x Tech-Priest Enginseer = £21

1x Onager Dunecrawler = £47.50

3x Kataphron Destroyers = £36

10x Skitarii Rangers = £30

Total = £134.50

Saving = £44.50

All these models, bought individually together, would cost you a total of £134.50. But since this Combat Patrol boxset has an RRP of £90, you’re saving £44.50 overall. That's a fair amount of savings, in fact, I think it might be one of the highest.

But now, with the monetary savings all figured out, it’s time to get into the nitty-gritty details such as, is this boxset even really worth it on the tabletop?

Tech-Priest Enginseer - This is possibly one of the weakest HQ choices in Shooting or Melee. But the Enginseer is a great support HQ; keep them near any vehicle and you’ll get a great amount of synergy due to their Awaken the Machine Special Rule.

Onager Dunecrawler - The first vehicle the Adeptus Mechanicus got, the Dunecrawler packs some great weapons. In fact, you can pretty much always equip the perfect loadout to deal with whatever you're expecting to fight.

Kataphron Destroyers - Ok, this is where I think the real value comes into this boxset, as you can build these as Kataphron Destroyers if you want, which carry some truly awesome firepower in the Kataphron Plasma Culverin and Heavy Grav-Cannon. They’re great at tearing apart heavy infantry and tanks alike, but have a lot less Armour than their counterparts. Or, you can build them as Kataphron Breachers which have a 2+ Save and still carry some great Weapons, but personally, I think the Torsion Cannon is great. Either way, these are two really solid units.

Skitarii Rangers - Rangers are great at long-range firefights. Their primary weapon is the Galvanic Rifle which can pose a threat to most infantry. The squad can also use a range of special weapons: Arc Rifles, Plasma Calivers, or a Transuranic Arquebus. Either way, a really good unit. However, I find the Skitarii Vanguard are a better unit; the Radium Carbine is an Assault 3, automatically Wounding a model on the roll of a 6. Even getting into Close Combat won’t help you as their Rad-Saturation special subtracts 1 Strength and Toughness from enemy models.

Overall I think this is a really good boxset, two of these and a Tech-Priest Dominus and you’ve got the core of a very formidable army. And they’re all really good units, so I really do think it’s worth the price tag.
