Greetings one and all,
Today’s article is gonna be a fun one as we continue our dive into the world of Konflikt 47, with a review of the “Konflikt 47 Introductory Set”. So strap in and get ready.
What is the Konflikt 47 Introductory Set?
There are many ways to get into K47, but the easiest is through one of its starter sets. Each army has its own set available. They’re all priced at around the £110 mark and, for the number of models you get in each of these army starter sets, they’re amazing value for money. However, there are also two starter sets called the “Starter Set” and the “Introductory Set”, which contain everything you and a friend might need to test the waters with the game and see if it’s something you could really get stuck into (or lost in, in my case).
After making some models for someone and getting that little “itch” for a new game, I wanted to see what this game was like for myself, so after a little deliberation, I bought myself the Introductory Set, and there were three reasons for it:
Other game systems are very light on rules and value for their often cheaper introductory sets, and I wanted to see if this bucked the trend.
I wasn't sure if this was a game I’d enjoy and this set seemed the best choice to test the waters (spoiler, I have very much enjoyed it).
I preferred the models in this set. (I really don't like the Vogelspinne in the larger Starter Set because spiders freak me out.)

Inside the Introductory Set boxset is everything you need to start your journey into K47, such as models, dice, a rulebook and more. But to be more precise, the full boxset for the Introductory Set contains the following (as written on the Warlord Games website):
Full colour, 68-page book - The Konflikt ’47 Field Manual
12 Plastic United States Fireflies
6 Plastic Axis Stahltruppen
Plastic Ruined Buildings Scenery
Game Token Punchboard
Double-sided Gaming Mat (30” x 22.4” approx.)
Eight Order Dice (4 Green / 4 Grey)
Six Rift Dice (3 Green / 3 Grey)
Ten six-sided dice
Dice Bag
Cardboard Insert that doubles as an in-game Bunker
Now first, let's just assess the value of this box set. To start, on the Warlord Games website, this box is priced at £42.50. When you consider that the terrain alone has an RRP of £20, you can already start to see just how good value this is. In fact, a very rough pricing of the stuff that is easy to put a value on comes out looking like this:
12 Plastic United States Firefly Airborne Infantry = £25
6 Plastic Axis Stahltruppen Heavy Infantry = £25
Konflikt '47 Ruined Building = £20
In just models and terrain alone, this boxset is insanely well-priced and that's not to mention all the other stuff that's harder to price as well, such as the dice and the Field Manual (which is also available online for free btw). Not only this, but you get everything you need to build and play this game in this one boxset right off the bat, without even needing to invest in extra bits to go with it - which you often find yourself needing to do with other game systems on the market - which is fantastic!
Learning the Game
Right, I’ve ranted on about how good value this set is, but is it any good at its intended role? That is, does it help people learn the game?

Honestly, yes. Yes it does. The Konflikt ’47 Field Manual that is included in this set is a great little book, clearly laid out, and gives you a good introduction and look into the lore of each of the armies of K47. It has build and painting guides for the models included in the set, a detailed explanation on how to play the game, and even has some beautiful artwork and photos that really gives you a good feel for the game itself and the setting.

As for playing the game, how you are guided through your introduction is via a series of 6 missions where you take control of a handful of specific models for each one, starting out simple with mission 1 that’s based on learning the basic “moving and shooting” mechanics of the game, and then getting a little more complex, such as with mission 3 that teaches you about “Pinning”. Each mission focuses on a specific rule of the game, which lets you build on your knowledge of the game with steady progression, all culminating in an epic clash with each side fielding multiple units and cardboard walkers at the end, letting you use all the knowledge you have gained in the final epic showdown.
However, please do understand that these missions do not cover every single rule in K47. This is only an introduction to the game, so it does omit some of the more nuanced rules overall. That being said, it does give a player more than enough of a feel for the game, and enables a strong basis from which to work and grow as a player.
Final Thoughts
I’ve been a wargamer for at least 28 years, and this must be the best introductory set I think I’ve ever seen. I’ve really enjoyed learning the system using this Introductory Set with my partner (and she’s renowned for struggling when it comes to learning rules). It gives you everything you need to play a game right off the bat, it provides a concise and guided method to learn the game, and it’s incredible value for money. I cannot recommend this set enough to anyone who would like to try K47.
Next time, I'm going to go over the Main Rule Book, which really should be the next step on your K47 journey. It's a really nice book, but spoilers, see you in a fortnight.
